Music

What I compose:

Music has been a lot more than background noise to me; like many others, it's a medium I've used to process thoughts, feel creative, and bond with others. I play the bass and compose music–solely with the bass. I started making music to show that the electric bass has a larger range than what that instrument is typically used for. One of the many features of my music is the repetition of themes that–when primed with other sounds–can feel very different from the first time you hear them. My songs are about experiencing video game nostalgia, having climate anxiety, being insignificant, working towards asymptotic goals, never being able to relax, having no control over time’s relentless passage, transforming formatively as human beings, growing beyond your old tastes, detecting and making use of subtleties, acting like we know what we're talking about when we don't, being part of a conceivable computer program in a world we try to recreate with other programs, collecting data about our planet, identifying various types of patterns, participating in various aspects of culture, universalities in expressing ourselves across languages, and what may not stand the test of time as skills/knowledge that's useful. The songs are a mix of indie, electronic-inspired, post-rock, ambient, and jazz-inspired music and could be appropriate for various soundtracks. The songs here are mostly intended to create tension (for climate outreach and television/film soundtracks), be ambient/sparse (for television/film soundtracks and art installations), be nostalgic (for video game soundtracks), and/or be quirky (for television/film soundtracks).

I wanted call myself Bassick, D-Tro, or Port Man Toe, but those names are taken. Instead, I call myself AshkenBASSic. Under the monicker AshkenBASSic, I made albums out of ten themes, and will continue to make music under different aliases in the future. If there are just a handful of albums I'd suggest you listen to under my aliases, it's the ones listed (linked) below; if you don't like one of them, try another because they're very different from each other. To listen to my songs, you can go to my Spotify or YouTube pages or you can click on the images below to go directly to the below albums on Bandcamp (which has the best sound quality):

This is a collection of songs about the limitations of our means of communication with things we don't understand. These songs are heavily electronic (transforming the sound of my bass to something very different), sometimes experimental, and often with percussive or other sounds.
This is a collection of songs devoted to sounds you might hear in/on the ocean. The sound samples were graciously provided by members of the ocean and cryospheric sciences communities. These songs are heavily electronic (transforming the sound of my bass to something very different), sometimes experimental, and sometimes not with percussive or other sounds.
This is an overview of many of the themes I wrote soundtracks for. These themes include the category of words we all first thought were endearing (onomatopoeias), the various aspects of what we refer to as culture, the patterns we follow and think we see, the seemingly likely possibility that we're part of a program (at least of sorts) and the consequences of that for what our lives mean (e.g., what happens in our lives is beyond our control, what we create is just inevitable, how our niches fit into the larger scheme of things, whether biologically reproducing ourselves is not as important as reincarnating ourselves in what we program,...), those moments when we feel like we're compelled to either pretend to know what we're doing or fess up to our ignorance/lack of skill, growing tired of the same-old same-old (not necessarily because of a mid-life crisis, depression, attention deficit, or anything other than you've had enough of some experience), being too late to be relevant, and periods of our lives when we're not sure what comes next but we know that we will grow into it (transforming formatively and whatnot). These songs lean experimental with (sometimes unsteady) percussive, brass, organ, drone, and other sounds.
This is a soundtrack to what it's like to be in the field collecting data about our planet.  It's often an expensive and lonely endeavor.  Typically, people can either collect one snapshot in time at many locations or monitor changes in time at a single point on earth.  Many scientists/engineers, sometimes with the help of robots and animals, have figured out how to observe attributes of the farthest reaches of our planet that others only decades ago have died trying to document or simply traverse.  I sit back, watch, and make use of data that comes in from the comfort of my chair, but have an appreciation for what goes into capturing these fleeting moments, which is what this collection of songs is supposed to convey. These songs lean experimental with some percussive and drone sounds.
This collection of songs is a soundtrack to subtleties of various sorts (or in the not-so-subtle sense) that we need to detect and/or use in life. These songs lean experimental with more percussive sounds than before, but they're barely there.  This is likely my most successful theme (in terms of quality of song).
