To provide fast response multi-disciplinary expert, to identify and demonstrate the benefit of opportunities and link and leverage those benefits and opportunities to the relevant stakeholder. Develop processes, best practices, innovation maturity, scalability and design for manufacture (at different fidelities) for the benefit of UK PLC and fusion while minimising risk and time to the emergence of a fusion power plant. We outline and undertake appropriate prototyping and testing activity to demonstrate the feasibility of designs to assure acceptable levels of risk.

STEP Lead Planner for Technology and Research for the main phase of Tranche 1, determining the path to develop the innovative technologies needed for Programme. The plan included the R&D (including rigs and facilities) both internally and externally to UKAEA, the enabling disciplines such as materials, manufacturing, digital, neutronics and Innovation (looking at reducing the gap between prototype and commercial through a series of innovation minimum viable demonstrators)
STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) Integration Work Package Lead (~£2M). The UK government has committed an initial £20 million for STEP conceptual design development. The Lead Integrator is responsible for coordinating the work across the individual STEP Work Package (including external collaborators both in industry and academia), ensuring they do not operate as individual silos.

EiC’s (Engineer in Charge) manage JET (world’s largest experimental magnetically confined fusion reactor) operations during experimental campaigns. The operation of the whole of the JET tokamak is the responsibility of the EiC representing the chief responsible safety officer. The EiC has the responsibility for ensuring that all operations comply with UKAEA safety, environmental and machine integrity requirements. In the event of an emergency incident the EiC assumes total strategic control of the incident and the Culham Site as “Silver Commander”.

Successfully managed the recommissioning of both injectors after the 2010 shutdown which led to one of their most productive MAST campaigns to date with the most reliable beams. The 2010 C&I upgrade that I personally designed and managed, has reduced the total MAST operational down time due to MAST NB from 22% to less than 1%. The design and implementation of getter pump control improvements have created a more stable operating regime and has saved around £30k. I managed the SS and SW PINI conditioning phase at the end of the campaign and designed and installed fast (1MHz) data acquisition which enabled us to finally get to 75kV on SW and have increased the highest power from 3.75 to 4.35MW.
