David is awarded the City of Shreveport Artist Fellowship in Literary Arts by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council. About David's submission, drawn from Weathering, his forthcoming collection of poetry and prose memoir, the literary juror David Ulin had this to say: "What I find inspiring about this work is not only the care and depth with which it has been assembled, but also a sense of the poet reaching out, testing (or even stepping beyond altogether) the boundaries of genre and of form. I am compelled . . . by the openness of the work here, the way it moves in unexpected directions and finds unexpected shapes and juxtapositions. It really is remarkable work." Chautauqua Writers' Center, Chautauqua, NY, Summer Poetry Workshop, "The Wonder of Travel": Poetry, writes Czeslaw Milosz, "is an expression of wondering at things," and travel "is a powerful means of inducing wonder." With examples at hand, we'll see how poets travel, how poets "do" a foreign place. Meanwhile, as aspiring poets, we'll begin by recording as in a journal the sights, sounds, smells, taste, and touch of a traveled-to, wonder-inducing place—Chautauqua, say, or somewhere else revisited in memory. By week's end, with imagination and craft, we'll have shaped a block of sensuous prose into a poem, itself a thing of wonder. No experience or advance submission necessary. Poetry reading: Sunday, July 2, 3:30 PM. Lecture, "Life amid the Ruins: Greece through Poets' Eyes": Tuesday, July 4, 12:15 PM. David reading "Goodbye to Serpents" by James Dickey in the Jardin des Plantes, Paris, France, with Christopher Dickey, who explains: "A day before David's birthday, he and I met at the Jardin des Plantes and went to the James Dickey bench in front of the Vivarium (the snake house). David had brought a copy of the poems, and read 'Goodbye to Serpents' impromptu in the rain."
