Catch A Wav

Catch A Wav

"Catch A Wav" was the winner of Adobe Software's choice for the Most Innovative Use of Flash® in Westwood College's 2009 Game Development Competition. The innovative feature that was referred to was the use of the microphone in the application. The microphone has been used in various Flash® games, yet it was the approach that we took that was one of the reasons stated as to why our game won the award.

The initial idea was developed by Jake VanGessel, and I was curious about the idea of using a microphone in a Flash® game. I told the team that I would look into the idea, and a day or two later, we got a working prototype. With this prototype, we collaborated, along with beta testing, an idea of being able to have a feature in the game that will set the microphone to an appropriate setting. We developed this idea, which was one of the reasons we won the award, into an initial test of the microphone utilizing a simple minigame before the game starts, attempting to trick the player into having fun while doing a very necessary function for our game. The player always has a choice to set microphone setting in the menu as well.

This was and is a very important project to me, for it not only gave me the award I really cherish, but it also tested my abilities as being lead programmer on the team. I had to overlook programming as well as create my very first, fully integrated, object-oriented code/engine for the Flash® ActionScript 3.0 language.

NOTICE:

You need a microphone to play the game. The application will not work without a microphone.

It may take a little while to load the application. If there is a blank space above, it is just taking a while to load the game.
