Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) and the Environment:
A Comprehensive Bibliographic Database of the World's Published Literature Relevant to PPCPs
This project provides a comprehensive, publicly accessible bibliographic database of the published literature that is directly or peripherally relevant to the many aspects of the large class of environmental contaminants originally termed pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) – a field of study that partly intersects with that of the so-called emerging contaminants or contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). This project started in 2008. The current version provides the final update (29 December 2017), marking the termination of this project. This final update contains over 29,000 entries; the simple printed web listing comprises 1,382 pages.
This database served as the basis for the first bibliometric overview of the early history surrounding the many facets of PPCPs research:
Daughton CG. "Pharmaceuticals and the Environment (PiE): Evolution and impact of the published literature revealed by bibliometric analysis." Science of the Total Environment 2016, 562:391-426; http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2016.03.109
For the first time, the electronic EndNote database library (Clarivate Analytics) has now been made available to the public. This library requires EndNote to open. Note, however, that the EndNote library itself does not contain the full text (e.g., reprints) for any of the references. Current employees of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can request the complete database (22GB), which does contain the reprints; see attached document (item 1, below) for instructions.
If the database is helpful in preparing your work for publication, it can be cited as follows:
Daughton CG and Scuderi MST, 2017 (29 December). "Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs): Relevant Literature," U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Las Vegas, NV (a comprehensive database of literature references; first implemented 19 February 2008); https://sites.google.com/site/daughton/PPCPs-bibliographic_database
Of the six documents attached below, the first (Synopsis) describes this project in more detail. The 2nd and 3rd documents (PDFs) provide simple plain-text listings of the full bibliographic citations for the ever-expanding published literature relevant to PPCPs. The listing in the 2nd document (PPCPs Literature References) comprises all published literature that is relevant to the many aspects of PPCPs as environmental contaminants; these records compose the main PPCPs literature database. The listing in the 3rd document (Drug Disposal) comprises a subset of the main database; these records are relevant specifically to the sub-topics of drug disposal and environmental stewardship. The 4th document (PDF) is the only listing available of all publications on PPCPs where at least one author was affiliated with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The 5th attachment is a custom EndNote Style file (ENS) [note: it is best to rename this file after download]. This particular style provides a comprehensively formatted output for all types of references. The actual output from this style can be seen throughout the 2nd attached document. The final and 6th attachment is an XML file required for enabling the correct Reference Type in EndNote (this file is simply imported via EndNote EDIT-Preferences-FileTypes).
The digital EndNote database library (23 MB) can be downloaded from the following link:

This compressed (ENLX) file runs on EndNote Reference Management software (http://endnote.com) but it contains no attachments.
The attached files (1-6), together with the digital EndNote library represent the last and final updates for this project (29 December 2017).
