b. Berkeley church condo
Daniel Karpinski created the design of a building overhanging the existing church, like a protective hand over the church.
Commitment to the neighborhood has inspired the design of the proposed building that demonstrates how a site that transcends three centuries can be re-imagined and re-invented, providing continuity to the street-scape and creating exciting, new potential for an historic district.
The development of this project brings several elements into play among them a 25 storey tower, a series of green terraces (complementing the green roof with a huge green house, a tribute to Crystal Palace), a transparent lap pool overhanging the sidewalk and Queen Street.
The program for the building includes the following:
• 260,000 ft2 of build-able space comprised of approximately 200 condominium suites
• retail and/or commercial frontage onto Queen Street East
• building and design decisions guided by a LEED benchmark and the City’s Green Development Standard aiming for a platinum level of LEED
• ultra-high energy efficiency and water usage design standards
• pedestrian and cycling-friendly design decisions and amenities including a resurrection of the historic Berkeley Bicycle Club
• a child and family friendly rooftop garden reflecting the City’s ongoing efforts to promote green roofs as a refuge for butterflies, indigenous birds, and as a means of rainwater harvesting
