We make every attempt to track all the vehicles that participate. This aids us in the ability to practice asset tracking as well as gauge where a cluster of stations has congregated as well as aiding recovery personnel with directions.
While it is encouraged that operators provide their own APRS trackers, we often have a couple of spare units to provide. We ask that you take the utmost care of this equipment as it is in your possession.
An APRS liaison monitors the APRS tracks on a computer and is able to relay the information collected to our Incident Commander.
Our event does not utilize APRS applications that require the Internet. All APRS should be done via RF (Radio, TNC, GPS, Antenna). Large events like this will most likely have spotty cellular coverage. You are encouraged to monitor the event via an app. however. Reference the assignments list to know what tracker (SSID) is associated with what tactical unit.
We have favored using PinPoint APRS in lieu of UI-View due to the ease of data creation, and live mapping capability. For full functionality you need to have an Internet source or cache your map data.
If using, please note: some people were having trouble updating settings on Pinpoint to reflect a new icon.
Turns out there was an issue with the program on certain computers that obscured the "OK" button needed to save settings changes, so no matter how often one entered changes they would not "take." I have worked with the developer to fix that problem, and there is a new 2.0 build #221127 that resolves the issue.
Apparently the programed screen resolution settings were such that on certain smaller or low-resolution laptops such as on a super cheap Evolve III ($59, Microcenter) the bottom of the options screen was cut off. With the new build the options screen is both easier to see and complete, so /5 + enter + click on OK changes the icon to green 5. And stays there.
If you just click update from the program, and alreadty have any "version 2.0" installed, it will say you are up to date. But unless you updated this afternoon already, you are not cstrictly current. You need to go here directly:
https://pinpointaprs.com/download.html
If you do not see build #221127 (or later), hit refresh on the web browser or reload the page until you do. UNINSTALL the old program; download and install the new build, and the problem should be fixed.
Operators using APRS should use their Callsign with an SSID of 1-15 (KD5UMO-3 for example).
The use of a tactical call is not recommended for this event.
It is important to provide your SSID prior to the event as Net Control and APRS users will use Translations to identify your Tactical assignment on the course.
