First important notes for those wishing to apply for the master course of the Economics Program

Please READ the application guideline carefully and check if you are eligible for application. Well, even the PDF file uploaded in the English site is written in Japanese. So I pick up several important notes below:

• Economics Program of Hiroshima University basically requires you to have Japanese language skills and good knowledge of undergraduate-level economics. This is why the application guideline is written in Japanese.

  • The majority of the classes are held in Japanese. Several classes offer English lecture, but you will not able to get sufficient credits for completion if you take only these classes.

  • Given such a circumstance, we require you to pass  Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or other equivalent language tests and submit the test score upon application to the Economics Program.

  • In addition, most professors of the Economics Program, including me, require the submission of the test score of Economic Record Examination (ERE) upon application. The question sentences of ERE are written only in Japanese. In addition, you need to attend one of the test centers in person. The test centers are found all over Japan, but not outside Japan.

• You also have to IN PERSON ATTEND the entrance exam interview held in Higashi-Hiroshima. We do not allow online interviews.

• Thus, the realistic chances to meet the requirement and pass the entrance exam would be limited if you do not have Japanese language skills in addition to the knowledge of undergraduate-level economics. In addition, it is not easy to learn Japanese language, even for Chinese people who share the Kanji writing system. Even if you somehow manage to attend these tests and interviews in person but do not have sufficient knowledge of both economics and Japanese language, it is waste of money.

• Note that several other progams of Hiroshima University offer English-only courses. If you are wishing to study in English only, I recommend other Programs of Hiroshima University or other universities.

• If you have a certain level of Japanese language skills and still wish to study in the Economics Program, please read the next section as well. 

Economics is different from business and management sciences

• Many would-be applicants state that they have studied and would like to continue studying business administration and management sciences. These are not economics. Try to find another supervisor if you wish to study business, management, marketing, accounting, etc. 

About your research proposal

There are actually so many would-be applicants who directly send emails. It is fine, but kindly attach your research proposal or your idea of your research plan, not just CV. At least at this moment before formal application, you may write your research proposal in English.

Research proposal is very important to check if your research interest and my speciality match. I will immediately reject your application if they do not match, however good you are--you should look for a better and fitting supervisor. Indeed, there have been many applicants who wish to study something out of my expertise (but such applicants still state that they have read my paper and thought that they would be a perfect match to my expertise...). I cannot provide proper guidance if my expertise does not much what you wish to study. If you still apply to me despite the difference in the research topics, I have to judge that you do not even make effort to check my expertise, unless you specifically explain the reason(s) that you chose me. Check my research interest and publications shown in this website, and apply only if your research plan and my expertise broadly match. Note, however, that I am not saying that you must do exactly the same research as I do. You can do your original research, but your research topic needs to broadly match my expertise. I basically welcome those wish to do something in micro-level empirical studies. "Immediate rejection" may  sound bad, but it saves you a few thousand USD of the travel expenses and visa application (if needed) you may waste to attend the entrance exam that you do not have a realistic chance to pass. 

I do not expect a perfect research proposal because I am aware that your research proposal is something you will improve through your study in the graduate school. But I expect:

• What research and what kind of topics you are thinking to study.

• If the research you are thinking is realistically doable. Some applicants write a proposal in which they state they would like to use very highly confidential data, either due to privacy or political complications, that you do not realistically have any chance to access.

• Do not write a method that you cannot explain by yourself. I understand your feeling that you wish to propose something sophisticated. But I will ask you about the detail of the method in the interview if you write it, and you may not pass the interview if you cannot properly explain it (well, I accept small errors in explanation, of course). In such a case, I assume that the proposal was written by someone else, not by yourself.

Directly apply for master course? Or first apply for "research student" and then apply for master course?

There are two ways of application. First, you can directly apply for the master course upon my consent for application (it does not mean I assure your acceptance), prepare all documents, including the ERE test score, and attend the entrance exam interview. You will be accepted if you pass the oral exam and fulfill all other requirements. Check the application guideline if you wish this way.

For those who are required visa for entry in Japan but do not currently have it, it is unrealistic to directly apply for master course, because you need to enter Japan to take ERE, even before application, then send application through postal service, and attend in person to the interview that will be held one month after the application deadline. Tourist visa would not allow you to stay in Japan for such a long time.

In such a case, you may first apply for "research student."

Research student is a common system in Japan in which you prepare for the graduate school exam. You have access to school library and various other resources of university, although you are not eligible for getting any credit and you will not receive any certificate for completion. You may become a research student for a half year or a full year and improve your knowledge of economics and Japanese language. 

You do not need to attend an in-person interview to become a research student. Upon acceptance, you will be eligible for a student visa, and you can enter Japan. 

Cautions: First, you still need to get consent from your would-be supervisor in graduate school, although you are not required to have ERE, and relatively unpolished research proposal may be accepted at this stage. Second, becoming a research student is not gratis, and you need to pay a research student tuition, which is less expensive than a full master course student.

If you wish to be a research student of Economics Program of Hiroshima University, check this page. You first need to register to the IAOS system and, if there is no problem, you will be officially allowed to communicate with me. You may directly communicate with me before registering to the IAOS system, but you cannot formally apply for a research student if you do not register to the IAOS system.

経済学プログラムの修士課程に応募したい人はまずこちらを

募集要項をよく読み、応募資格があるか確認してください。とくに以下の点に注意。

• 広島大学大学院経済学プログラムでは、日本語の知識および学部レベルの経済学の十分な知識が必須です（この文章を、翻訳ツールを使わずに読めているなら問題ないはずですが）。

  • ほとんどの科目は日本語で講義されます。英語で行われる科目もありますが、そうした科目だけを履修して終了に必要な単位数を修得することはできません。

  • そのため、経済学プログラムへの応募に際して、日本語検定試験（JLPT）もしくはそれに類する試験を受け、その成績を提出する必要があります。

  • 加えて、私を含め、経済学プログラムの多くの教員の指導を受けたい場合は経済学検定（ERE）のテストスコアの提出が必須です。EREは日本語で実施されます。加えて、EREは日本国内にあるテストセンターで受ける必要があります。

• また東広島市で行われる面接試験に、対面で参加する必要があります。現在のところ本プログラムではオンラインでの面接は認めていません。

• したがって、もし日本語の知識が無い、あるいは学部レベルの経済学の知識が無い学生が、経済学プログラムの大学院試験に合格する可能性は、現実的にほとんどありません。しかし受験のためには、EREの受験から面接まで、日本に来る必要があり、お金がかかります。

• 広島大学の他のプログラムには、英語のみで修了可能なものもあります。もし英語のみで修了したい場合は、他のプログラム、あるいは他の大学を受けることを勧めます。

• これらの条件を満たし、経済学プログラムで学びたい人は、続きも読んでください。 

経済学と経営学

• 経済学と経営学は全くの別物です。企業経営、会計、マーケティングなどを学びたいならば、他の先生を探してください。

研究計画書について

私のところに直接メールを送ってくる志望者がたくさんいます。それは構いませんが、履歴書だけでなく研究計画書あるいは研究のアイデアをまとめたものも送ってください。

研究計画書は、あなたの研究したい内容と私の専門分野が合致するか確かめるために非常に重要です。あなたがどれほど優秀であったとしても、研究内容が合致しない場合には、即座に不合格とします。もっとあなたに合う指導教員を探してください。分野が合わなければ、私にあなたを適切に指導することはできません。また分野が合っていないのに私を志望してくることは、教員の研究分野を調べることすら怠っていると判断せざるを得ません。このホームページにも書いてある、私の研究分野や論文などをチェックし、あなたの研究したい内容と私の専門分野が広い意味で合うと思った場合のみ応募するようにしてください。ただし、完全に私のやっていることと同じ研究をしろと言っているわけではありません。当然、あなたはオリジナルの研究をして良いです。ただ、あなたの研究トピックが、広く私の専門と合う必要があるということです。一般的に言うと、ミクロレベルでの実証分析をしたい学生は基本的にWelcomeです。即座に不合格と言うと、厳しく聞こえるかもしれませんが、EREや本番の試験の受験にかかる多額の旅費やビザ代金などを、合格できない受験のために無駄に支払うことを避けることができます。

完璧な研究計画書を求めるわけではありません。入学後の勉強を通して、研究計画も向上させていくものだからです。とはいえ、以下の点は入学前であっても重要です。

• 何を研究したいのか、どんなテーマの研究がしたいのか。

• やりたいと思っている研究が現実的に実行可能か。個人情報であったり、政治的に難しい問題を含んだ、機密性が高いデータを使用した分析がしたいという研究計画を書く人もいますが、そうしたデータを使用できる可能性は低く、研究の実行可能性が低いと判断します。

• 自分で説明できないような手法を書かないこと。洗練された分析方法を研究計画に書きたい気持ちはわかりますが、その場合面接で私は分析手法の詳細の説明を求めます。もしその手法をあなた自身の言葉で説明できないとすれば（多少誤りがある程度なら許しますが）、私は研究計画書をあなた自身で書いていないと判断します。

修士課程に直接応募するか、まずは研究生になるか

修士課程に入学するには、二つの方法があります。第一に、直接修士課程に応募することです。私の同意を受け（ただし同意は合格の確約ではありません）、EREのテストスコアを含めた必要書類を準備し、面接試験に参加してもらいます。応募に際しては募集要項をよく読んでください。

日本への入国にビザが必要な国の人で、現在ビザを持っていない人の場合、直接修士課程に応募するのは現実的ではありません。なぜならまず応募前に日本に入国し、EREを受け、応募し、応募締め切りから一か月ほど後の面接を対面で受ける必要があるからです。観光ビザでは、このように長期滞在することはできません。

この場合、まずは研究生になることができます。

研究生は日本の大学にはよくあるシステムで、大学院試験への準備をするためのものです。図書館などさまざまな大学の資源にアクセスすることができますが、単位を取ったり、修了しても資格を得ることはできません。半年あるいは一年の期間研究生になることができ、経済学や日本語の知識を向上させることができます。

研究生になるのに、対面での面接は必要ありません。研究生としての入学を許可されたら、学生ビザを取得できるので、日本に入国できるようになります。

注意点：第一に、研究生になるにも、指導教員の同意が必要です。ただし研究生になるのにEREは不要で、またまだ十分洗練されていない研究計画であったとしても受け入れられる可能性があります。第二に、研究生は無料ではありません。正規の大学院生の学費よりは安いですが、それでも学費を払う必要があります。

もし経済学プログラムの研究生になりたいのであれば、このページをチェックしてください。まずIAOSシステムに登録する必要があり、もし問題が無いようであれば、正式に私と連絡を取る権利が与えられます。実際はIAOSシステムへの登録前に直接私に連絡をくれても構いませんが、最終的に研究生に応募するためには、まずIAOSシステムに登録することが必要となります。

語学学校、塾などで準備をする人へ（そしてそれらの学校の担当の人へ）

大学の研究生としてではなく、語学学校や塾などに入学し、学生ビザを得て入国し、その後修士課程に直接応募してくる人もいます。別にこのことに問題はありません。しかし、以下の点に注意してください。

• よく入試の応募期間ギリギリに私の同意を求める連絡をしてくる人がいます。研究計画の内容が合致していなかったり、修正すべき点がある場合でも、直前では指摘のしようがありませんから、面接の本番で指摘することになります。これにきちんと応答して、こちらを納得させるのは非常に難しいことです。合格のチャンスを増やしたければ、ギリギリではなく、できるだけ早い段階で連絡を取るようにしてください。実際のところ、同意を取っていなかったとしても、応募書類が事務で受理されれば、面接に来ることは可能ですが、それもある程度費用と時間がかかります。だから出来るだけ早く連絡し、少なくとも研究テーマの点では問題ないことを確認してから受験するようにした方が、お金を無駄にするリスクも減らせます。

• これらの学校の先生から研究計画書の指導を受けることもあると思います。もちろんこのことに問題はありませんし、特に日本語の添削を受けたい気持ちはわかります。しかし、例え指導を受けるのだとしても、研究計画書を全部先生に書いてもらうのでなく、きちんとあなた自身がやりたいことをよく考え、あなた自身の手で研究計画書を書いてください。もしあなた自身で研究計画書を書いていないのだとすれば、そんな学生は採用したくありません。またあなた自身が書いたかどうかは、面接の場での質問をすれば分かります。
