FINDING MEANING IN MAKING
Our lives are filled with all sorts of products, most of which come from the cogs of mass production, from a faraway land with little connection to people or place. This type of existence disconnects us from one another, how things are made & where they come from. I’d like to remedy that problem by reconnecting you to the human touch of natural materials. In an age where many things exist only in digital worlds, I hearken back to a more human time with natural wood worked & styled by a craftsman. You deserve something better than crumbling particle-board furniture. We can design from scratch, or work from a picture. I work mostly in the Craftsman & Shaker styles; furniture traditions that reflect an honest, solid way of life. Take a tour of my shop & furniture projects with the video & slideshow below. Coupled with making fine furniture, I also restore vintage machinery, with its elegant design & robust quality. From Grandma knitting in her rocker, to a child building with blocks by the fireplace, there is something deeply satisfying & richly human about creating things by hand. Join me in this long tradition of treasuring the physicality & humanness of working wood one piece at a time. - Joshua Pauling
