504 & IEP
What is a 504?
A 504 plan is like a blueprint for how the schools will support a student with a disability and remove barriers to learning environment. It is a minimum set of standards to provide services to students with a disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
Section 504 is a Civil Rights Act which prohibits discrimination against individuals with a disability in any program receiving federal financial assistance. In order to fulfill its obligation under Section 504, Cedar Rapids Community School District recognizes a responsibility to avoid discrimination in policies and practices regarding its students. No discrimination against any student solely due to his/her disability will knowingly be permitted in any of the programs and practices in the school system. Visit here for district information.

Process for requesting or reviewing 504
Does your child have a disability that is substantial limiting one or more major life activities? Students may be referred by a parent, teacher or school staff member.
Reach out to the 504 Coordinator, this will be your child's assigned academic counselor by last name.
The school team will review the referral. That team typically includes the school district's 504 coordinator, the school nurse, the student's teachers, a school administrator and potentially an at-risk coordinator, then evaluates the student to convene and consider multiple sources of data including teacher observations, various past assessments, grades, attendance, results from tests, etc. The team makes the consensus placement decision based on the student’s needs and the related services and aids needed as determined through the evaluation process. Keep in mind, this process can take several weeks to a month before a decision is made.
The 504 Coordinator will contact parent/guardian regarding whether or not the 504 is being implemented, updated or denied.
If your child had a 504 from CRCSD middle school, it will carry over to the high school. Keep in mind that 504's can be reviewed annually, but only need to be reviewed once every three years. If you feel that your child's 504 plan needs to be updated, modified, reviewed or dropped, please reach out to the 504 Coordinator (Academic Counselor).
Process for requesting IEP Special Education
"If a parent or other concerned adult believes a student may need special education services, they are encouraged to talk with the student’s teacher or principal. Specialists from Grant Wood Area Education Agency are assigned to schools and will work with the family and school staff to identify any areas in which a student may be having difficulty," Cedar Rapids School District, click here for more information.
