This page will highlight the hobby of Paper Card Modeling.
I've been building paper card models on and off, for about 50 years ( ! ). My interest mainly lies with the 1:250 scale ships, but I also work in other scales and other subjects. Here is a list of completed projects:
1. KM LEIPZIG, Kriegsmarine Leichter Kreuzer, 1:250 scale, Wilhelmshaven kit # 1203; German light cruiser as in 1939. Model built 1972, upgraded 1982.
2. KM U-37, Kriegsmarine typ IXa U-boot, 1:250 scale, Wilhelmshaven kit, old #1225 (o-o-p); German U-boat, 1st type IXa as in 1940. Model built 1973, upgraded & modified 1982 ( lower hull added ).
3. HERMES, Hochseeschlepper, 1:250 scale, Wilhelmshaven kit #1031; German salvage tug as in 1955. Model built 1977. Simple kit highly modified. All 2 dimensional "flat" detail was made 3 dimensional & painted to match original ink colors. Wood masts & wire hand rails added. ( this was before photo-etch rails )
4. M.S. KONINGIN JULIANA, Channel Ferry, 1:350 scale, Leon Schuyt kit # A25; Dutch English Channel ferry, based at Hoek van Holland in the 1970's. Model built 1984. Kept this one simple: no add-ons.
5. Boeing 707, Lufthansa Jetliner, 1;100 scale, J F Schreiber kit (o-o-p); Model built 1984. My first aircraft kit. Simple starter ( in-flight mode only--no landing gear ). Nice foil-like bare metal finish however.
6. McDonnell-Douglas F-4B PHANTOM II, USN carrier fighter, 1:50 scale, Wilhelmshaven kit #1641; Model built 1985. Very detailed-intakes, exhausts, landing gear & underwing stores. Only mod was cutting out and reversing of gray colored control surfaces, to correct color (to white).
7. BM TIGER S41, Bundesmarine Schnellboot Typ 148, NATO Nr P6141, 1:250 scale, Wilhelmshaven kit # 1242; German modern guided missle fast attack craft. Model built 1986. Very detailed little kit. Full tower mast construction. Exocet MM38 canisters & 76mm OTO-Melara gun details. My first use of photo-etched hand rails on a card model. ( mid-80's issue by IPMS/USA )
8. M.S. EUROPA (IV), Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrtenschiff, 1:200 scale, J F Schreiber kit # 72230-X; Modern German cruise ship, as in 1982. Model built 1987. Basically straight from the kit. Only time I've ever used the printed paper hand rails ( just barely acceptable on a white ship ). Notable enhancement; SnJ bronze metallizer on spare props on foredeck.
9. SUKHOI Su-9, USSR 1960's Supersonic Interceptor, NATO code name "FISHPOT-B", 1:33 scale, GELI kit # 40; Model built 1988. Since design includes a simple cockpit interior, I fabricated a vacform canopy for this one. Also a nice bare metal finish from this printer, though they do tend to over use it.
10. BM SCHÜTZE SM 1, Bundesmarine SCHNELLES MINENSUCHBOOT, NATO Nr M1058, 1:250 scale, Wilhelmshaven kit # 1216; 1960's German NATO fast minesweeper. Model built 1996. Well detailed kit, enhanced with photo-etched radar screen & hand rails. Also dry transfers applied to deckhouse for NATO pennant number specific to Schütze as commissioned. ( Incidentally, the name means "shooter" ,ie. 'the archer', the German term for the constellation Sagittarius.)
11. TORNADO Fighter-Bomber, RAF / Desert Storm, "peanut scale", a Fiddler's Green postcard model; Model built 1998. Working swing wing feature in a 5.5" long model! Boxed in intakes & reshaped canopy to improve appearance, otherwise stock.
12. Hafenschlepper "LIANE", ~1:250 scale, simple 20's style harbor tug, from HMV. Model built 2000. Based on free sample model, in approx. 1:200 scale, which was included in the '1999 Kartonmodellbau SPEZIAL'(Card Modeling Special Edition) of the German hobby publication, ModellWerft (Model Shipyard). Scanned, renamed & resized, as a 'quickie' project.
13. Avion de Chasse H 75-C-1 (Curtiss Hawk 75A-3), Armee de l' Air, 1940, ~1:75 scale, A quick test build from 2001, based on a reproduction of an old 1940s 'ingenia' kit in 1:50sc. which I picked up from Joe Bloom at the year 2000 US Convention in Dayton. The colors, while looking rather good at first glance, were nevertheless at bit speckled & splotchy due to the texture of the paper of the original. It was scanned, colors cleaned up, & printed to fit letter size card. The result looked so good I found myself building it right away! I plan to do this one again, with improvements.
Current projects (Dec '20 ) include;
1. Escorteur d'Escadre Surcouf 1:400 scale, Mały Modelarz 11-58 ; This is an improvement of the original sheets of Polish publisher MAŁY MODELARZ [Little Modelers]. Published in November 1958 in quasi-Soviet fictional colors, and hidden under the general title, "Współczesny niszczyciel eskortowy" [modern destroyer escort]. Available on the CD collection "MAŁY MODELARZ" 1958, it is the French Navy destroyer Surcouf built to the Torpilleur T47 design after the war.
2. USS OREGON BB3, 1898, 1:250 scale, Digital Navy kit DN11 ; Spanish-American War era early 'Steel Navy' Battleship. Model being built as a construction review to be posted on the web.
3. USS TICONDEROGA CG47, 1983, 1:250 scale; HMV kit ; 1st Aegis Guidedmissile Cruiser, as commissioned. A well detailed kit With railings and other details as photo etched parts. I will build the lower hull, but leave it removeable, as I like the waterline display.
4. Hafenschlepper "SIRIUS" ( Hapag-Lloyd ), 1:250 scale, from Wilhelmshaven kit # 1078; Modern German harbor tug. Another of Wilhelmshavens well detailed small craft to change the pace.
5. Boeing IM-99 'BOMARC', Interceptor Missile, 1:50 scale, from Wilhelmshaven kit # 1609; Rocket & Ram jet powered area defense missile, from the Cold War days of the '50's/'60's. Airframe essentially complete; finishing ramjets. Launch Platform and transport trailer as display options, yet to come.
6. Saab JA 37 VIGGEN, Swedish Fighter Bomber in splinter scheme, 1:50 scale (reduced from original 1:33 scale) from FLY Model kit #41. Going together nicely despite reduced scale. Full cockpit & wheel wells, though complex gear legs will be a challenge at this scale!
7. KM PRINZ EUGEN, Kriegsmarine Schwerer Kreuzer as in 1945, 1:250 scale, WWII heavy cruiser, 2nd editon by cfm Verlag. Newly released updated edtion addresses all problems with earlier version, especially the short hull. New version has proper hull length and shape, with full hull option, designed by Dieter Pongratz. Picked up from Thomas Pliener at 7th IPMC.
8. U.S.S. Forrestal, CVA-59, USN 1st Super-Carrier as built in 1955, 1:250 scale from Wilhelmshaven kit # 1200; Currently, digitaly re-coloring this one to shades of bluish/gray on computer (using Corel Draw) to correct the color scheme, which was printed in shades of green(?!)
9. U.S.S. Benham, DD-397, USN destroyer as in 1942, 1:250 scale, my own design done to Wilhelmshaven standards. Started in 1978 as a scratch building project, but never finished. With today's PC software, this may be resurrected yet as a card model. Hull & boiler trunking/funnel completed, so far. Much work to do on this yet!
