Education & Experience: Dr. Asad Khattak received his Masters & Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University in 1988 & 1991, respectively. Dr. Khattak is currently Beaman Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) at The University of Tennessee, & serves as (i) Coordinator for the Transportation Group in CEE, ii) Associate Director, Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety, a National University Transportation Center consortium led by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, & iii) Co-Director of the Initiative for Sustainable Mobility. He is affiliated with the UT Center for Transportation Research, where he works on a broad range of research & educational projects sponsored by state & federal agencies. He teaches courses related to intelligent transportation systems, transportation safety, & planning. Before joining University of Tennessee, during 2006-2013, he was Frank Batten endowed chair Professor of Civil Engineering at Old Dominion University where he developed & directed ODU’s transportation research initiatives & educational programs. He received the “Shining Star Award” from ODU for helping students succeed academically, professionally, & personally inside & outside the classroom setting. During 1995-2006, Dr. Khattak was Professor of Transportation at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he was the founding director of the Carolina Transportation Program. During 1991-1995, he actively participated in conducting research on advanced transportation management & information systems at the California PATH Program, University of California at Berkeley.

Scholarship: Dr. Khattak has co-authored 226 articles & reports (170 scholarly journal articles & 74 technical reports to research sponsors). He has given 251 presentations at international conferences & as invited talks. A majority of the papers have appeared in top quartile (Q1) transportation journals, such as Transportation Research, Accident Analysis & Prevention & IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Transactions. His Google Scholar H-index is 50 & Web of Science H-Index is 32. He has worked internationally at University of Oxford in England, the French National Institute for Transport & Safety Research, known as INRETS, Ajou University, South Korea, Chang’an University, China, & University of Aveiro, Portugal. As a principal- or co-investigator, he has successfully obtained funding for 74 sponsored research & educational projects ($3.0 Million research expenditures in recent 5 years). The projects have fostered positive working relationships with faculty at home & other institutions, helped in in student recruitment & support (graduated 15 Ph.D. students & 37 Masters students).

Research expertise & sponsorship: Dr. Khattak’s expertise relates to various types of innovations related to: 1) intelligent transportation systems, 2) transportation safety, & 3) sustainable transportation. More specific topics include: connected & automated vehicles & large-scale (big) data analytics. His recent research has been sponsored by numerous agencies, including the National Science Foundation, US Department of Transportation (through several university transportation centers), US Department of Energy, & Virginia, & Tennessee Departments of Transportation. Other sponsors include US Environmental Protection Agency, California & North Carolina, Departments of Transportation, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, & foundations such as RWJF & ATRI.

Service: Dr. Khattak has served the discipline of transportation engineering as: 1) Editor-in-Chief of Science Citation Indexed Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems, with a 2020 2-year impact factor of 4.277, 2) Associate Editor of International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, with a 2019 2-year impact factor of 2.709, 3) Special adviser to the Journal of Transportation Safety & Security, (2020 IF: 3.000) & Advisory Board Member of Analytic Methods in Accident Research (2020 IF: 11.8). Additionally, he serves as reviewer for several prestigious journals & as panelist for proposals submitted to the US National Science Foundation & to various University Transportation Centers in the U.S. His service to professional organizations is further reflected in active participation with the Council of University Transportation Centers & as a member of the Committees on User Information Systems, Traveler Behavior & Values, & Travel Demand Forecasting, Transportation Research Board. He co-chaired the TRB Advanced Traveler Information Systems sub-committee during 2003-2015.
