Scientific Research. I lead a research activity centred on the physics of terahertz (THz) devices with an emphasis on the application of THz time domain spectroscopy (TDS) to the dynamics of nanostructured devices In particular, my investigations have been concentrated on intersubband phenomena such as THz quantum cascade lasers, THz spin excitations, THz nonlinear optics and THz technology.
Summary of Recent research activity (2008-present):
1) Ultrafast Laser Dynamics. Application of THz phase locked pulses and direct RF modulation of QCLs to investigate gain dynamics, THz pulse amplification and modelocking. Publications in Nature, Nature Photon., Nature Comm., Laser and Photonics Review, Optica, Appl. Phys. Lett., Optics Express and Optics Lett.. Patent filed on monolithic dispersion compensation scheme
2) Non-linear optics in THz QCLs. Investigation of the non-linear properties of QCLs, comparing resonant non-linearities with those related to the bulk properties. This permits frequency conversion without considerations of phase matching and allows wavelength shifting of an optical carrier. Patent on wavelength shifting and publications in Nature Photonics, Science Advances, Nature Comm, Appl. Phys. Lett and Optics Express.
3) Spin Excitations in Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors and Ferromagnetics. Application of THz TDS to directly probe the dynamics of spin excitations in dilute magnetic semiconductors and ferromagnetic materials. Publication in. Phys. Rev. Lett., Advanced Materials, Nature Comm, Advanced Science, Advance Optical Materials, Appl. Phys. Rev.
4) THz Photoconductive Switches. Development of THz sources and detectors. Patent on new THz devices and publications in Appl. Phys. Lett., IEEE THz Science and Technology, Electronic Letters, Photonics Research.
5) THz 2D materials – A new direction where 2D semiconductor materials have matured to be controlled in terms of growth and devices, and I am engineering their optical and electrical response for device concepts in the THz and far-infared (FIR) region. Publication in Advanced Materials, InfoMat.
