The Pinewood Derby is one of the events that Cub Scouts look forward to each year. Cub Scouts transform a block of wood into a car. The boys race them down the track in a fun family event. Awards are also given for car designs.
Pinewood Derby Rules
Car Kits: Only official BSA Pinewood Derby kits may be used. All wheels, wood, and pins (axles) must come from this kit.
Car Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
Width shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces as measured by the Pack scale.
Wheel Bearings: washers & bushings are not permitted.
Springs are not permitted.
Attachments: no starting or any assistance devices are to be attached to the car.
Pre-built Cars: there will be no pre-built or professionally built cars permitted in the race.
Axle Lubricants: only powdered graphite (available at the Scout Store) is permitted and must be applied before the weigh-in the day of the race.
Weights: Loose weights will not be permitted (weights designed for the cars are available at the Scout Store and most Hobby Shops).
Weigh-ins: All cars will be weighed in twice before the actual race.
First weigh in will be within a week of race day, and again on Race Day.
Height: Cars must have 3/8-inch clearance between the car and track guides. Any lower clearance and the car will not run properly.
Block Width: Must be at least 1 3/4 inches wide in order for the car to fit on the slats.
Wheels: may be sanded to remove burrs and ridges, but may not be altered in any other way.
Numbers: Each Scout will be assigned a number at the initial weigh-in; please affix it to the car.
Construction: All cars must be constructed for this race. If a car is found to be previously constructed--it will be disqualified.
All cars MUST meet BSA standards and pass tech in order to race.
Note: Cars must be completely assembled at the time of the weigh in, and your number must be put on your car after you receive it at the weigh in! All Cars will be weighed in twice, once on the weigh-in night and again on the day of the race. Please let your Den Leader know if you cannot make the initial weigh-in.
ALL DECISIONS MADE ON THE DAY OF THE RACE BY THE COMMITTEE AND JUDGES ARE FINAL!!
Note: An adult must accompany all children at the weigh-in night and at the races. The Scout must attend the race to participate!
Scoring is on a point basis; 1st place=4pts., 2nd place=3pts., 3rd place=2pts., 4th place=1pt.
The Scout Store Stocks a variety of accessories and construction aids for the pinewood derby cars (Templates, weights, etc.).
Glue Axles into place not wheels.
Make the body as smooth as possible.
Make the Car as close to 5 ounces as possible.
Do not put wheels on before painting.
A gap of 1/32 of an inch is recommended between car body and wheel.
