ASLN Members Go to the Zoo!

Post date: Nov 07, 2012 2:30:49 AM

ASLN members met this past Sunday for a drawing opportunity at the Los Angeles Zoo.  We were met with many costumed families as our trip coincided with the park's "Boo at the Zoo" weekend event.  The zoo was festive and decorated with Halloween ornamentation.  Some of the animals were treated with pumpkin feasting as a result.  The weather was quite warm which unfortunately kept many of the creatures favoring shaded areas or hiding in unseen areas.  Plenty were active and willing to pose, however.  As the animals would allow, we would quickly try to sketch out gestural drawings to get a feel for the movement and  personality of their actions. The event proved itself merry and rewarding, as it required most to get out of their comfort zones and to take their drawing habits public.  We even ran into another group of artists from CalArts and neighboring schools who took to the sketchpad as they studied the beasts.

If you're looking to improve your drawing skills, there is little better one can do than to participate in our ventures outside of the school place.  Meeting up with fellow peers and artists is a great way to motivate yourself to learn and produce more work.  Stay updated with our events, and join us for the next one. -Ty Rodriguez
