Prerequisite: Math 2550 and Math 3450 with minimum C grade.
Topical outline: Vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, canonical forms, scalar product spaces.
Student Learning Outcomes: Students who successfully complete Math 4570 will:
know the basic propertied and theorems of abstract vector spaces.
know the basic propertied and theorems of linear transformations.
be able to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of linear transformations.
be able to perform change of bases of vector spaces.

Textbook: “Linear Algebra” by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence 4th edition
Publisher: Prentice Hall. ISBN 0-13-008451-4
All the topics covered in the course will be presented in class meetings.
Students are encouraged to ask questions and actively participate during class lectures and presentations.
Course requirements: There will be homework, weekly quizzes, a midterm exam, and a final exam. The course grade is determined as follows:
Notebook: 5%
Quizzes: 20%
Midterm Exam: 30%
Final Exam: 50%
Notebook: All the topics covered in the course will be presented in class meetings. Although at times the textbook will be followed closely, it should be considered more as a reference book. Not all topics in the textbook will be covered, while additional topics will be covered in the lectures. This necessitates all lectures to be recorded in a class Notebook which will function as the official class textbook. The notebook format will be discussed on the first class meeting.
Homework: Homework submission is optional, however doing homework is a very important factor for learning the course material. Therefore, students are strongly advised to attempt all the homework in order to be well prepared for the exams. If you choose to submit your homework for feedback, students are required to write their own solutions of at most five homework problems. Although students are allowed to discuss the homework problems with others, copying and submitting homework solution someone else wrote, is meaningless and it is not allowed. Submitted homework will be corrected and returned promptly.
There will be no makeup exams or quizzes.
