Standing Water - Many bronze pieces have areas where water may not drain correctly. As the water sits in these areas and eventually evaporates it leaves white colored residue that if untreated will cause corrosion to occur. This type of corrosion is hard to remove and clean.
Fertilizer and Landscape Chemicals - All kinds of landscaping and concrete cleaning are all done around bronze statues. All of these chemicals can cause severe damage to the statues if not removed, completely cleaned and polished. Since landscaping, pressure washing, and other spraying and treating shrubs and grasses are done regularly, the bronze should be checked every month to ensure no settling residue is accumulating on the bronze to cause corrosion to quickly attack the metal. Metals absorb chemicals and moisture to then begin to sweat it back out causing spotting that also damages the bronze if left untreated.
Bird Droppings - Baked on droppings can quickly cause corrosion to occur leaving areas where the patina is damaged.
Acid Rain - Acid rain from the elements in the air can cause a lot of spotting on bronze. These spots can be difficult to remove if left untreated.
These are a few of the problems that can occur with bronze statuary pieces. A regular maintenance program will insure that the problems never cause damage to the pieces and will keep them looking like the artist intended where they can be enjoyed for many, many years.
