What is the hash, you ask? The Hash House Harriers (abbreviated HHH, H3, or referred to simply as Hashing) is an international group of non-competitive running, social and drinking clubs. The first Hash kennel was founded in 1938 in Kuala Lumpur. An event organized by a club is known as a Hash or Hash Run, with participants calling themselves Hashers. There are more than 1,700 kennels spanning all seven continents. Most major cities are home to at least one chapter. Kennels typically contain 20-100 members, usually mixed-sex and some metropolitan area Hashes can draw more than 1,000 hashers to an event. Hashing does NOT refer to any illegal substance. Hey, if you want to experiment with illegal substances, well, that's up to you. Just don't assume that we might care to join you or to even hear about it. If, on the other hand, you are an adult who enjoys drinking beer, running and/or walking with a group, and participating in fun and ribaldry, then you are in the right place! You can find more about hashing on Wikipedia.
The basics of hashing - Each run begins with 1-3 "hares" who, using chalk, flour or toilet paper, lay a trail, typical 3 -5 miles, for other hashers to follow. Markings can often be tricky, leading the hounds down several "bad trails" before finding "true trail". Along the way, there is at least one beer stop and often more, which are usually, but not always, stocked with water and other non-alcoholic beverages as well. At the end of trail, hashers gather into a circle, sing some songs and drink the rest of the beer. Hashers are called into the middle of the circle for various reasons (Hash crimes) and are instructed to consume the rest of their beverage (aka a "down down") while the other hashers sing them a song. After this, we gather at a local bar/restaurant for more beverages and dinner.
