Things to Know about Citations

  • Using appropriate citations and quotation marks protects you from accusations of plagiarism.

  • Use citations when you

    • quote from someone else's work

    • use someone else's ideas or opinions

    • paraphrase or summarize someone else's work

  • You don't need to use citations when you

    • use well-known facts or common knowledge (unless you're using someone else's description)

    • state your own opinions or ideas

    • write your conclusion and include already-cited information

  • It's better to over-cite than under-cite.

  • Make your Works Cited page first so you don't forget the sources you've used.

  • Follow the correct format for in-text and Works Cited citations.

  • Double-check the generated citation and fill in the blanks if possible.

  • In a Works Cited page, include only works you cite in your paper or project.

  • In a Bibliography, include all works you consulted whether or not you cited them.
