Preston Lewis Pope during his tenure as Grand Master of the Jurisdiction of Connecticut, Prince Hall conceived the idea to form a Masonic Lodge in Bloomfield. This was due to the fact that quite a few brothers in Excelsior Lodge #3 of Hartford were residents of Bloomfield, Connecticut and a Masonic presence was needed in the town. The following members of Excelsior Lodge #3: Bros. John Conley, Fred Wallace, Edward Wilson, Lloyd Macbeth, Lorenzo Gulley, Jake Upshaw, David Taylor, and Willie Walker agreed to demit to form Composite Lodge under dispensation (UD). The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Connecticut appointed, authorized and empowered Worthy Brother John H. Conley to be Worshipful Master, Brother Fred Wallace to be Senior Warden and Brother Edward Wilson to be Junior Warden of a lodge of free and accepted Masons. It was decided that its name should be Composite -"the unity of all building styles." Composite Lodge, UD was challenged by the Grand Lodge to bring in more candidates, which they did. The first class of Composite Lodge raised by WM Conley included: Floyd Bagwell, Jr., Mitchell Coleman, Emanuel Defoe, Earnest Delaney, Johnny Dupree, Everett Fredericks, Robert Gadson and Jim McMikle. Since its inception Composite Lodge has grown and prospered to become one of the most successful lodges in the jurisdiction. Composite Lodge #22 of Bloomfield, Connecticut was chartered September 6, 1980.
