More than three years ago, one of our fellow Kiwanians had a vision to send high school age youth to Washington DC to reinforce leadership skills and give them an inside look at their democracy in action using the nation's capital as a living classroom. We received a very generous donation and a grant from Blue Mountain Community Foundation. We decided to call our group Dayton Kiwanis Road to Leadership. Working with the school and the Close Up Washington DC nonprofit organization we offered the students in the sophomore class the opportunity to apply for this trip. Students interested in going had to apply for the trip and we chose four students and Shayna Hutchens, their teacher/advisor, to go! We are so excited and proud of these young adults. After returning, they will speak to different organizations about their experience and be our ambassadors for future trips.
Today we went and saw the White House. Although we didn’t go inside, it was still really cool. Another interesting thing we did was explore the city and some of its memorable statues. We also went and explored Arlington Cemetery, and watched the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. This was our last day, so we evaluated everything we had learned throughout the week. Then we ended the day with a banquet followed by a dance.
