Getting Better All The Time!

When did you graduate from the COD Paralegal Studies program?
I graduated in December 2014.
Where are you currently working?
College of DuPage. I never left! Actually, I’ve been employed at College of DuPage since November 2015. I am a professional tutor in the learning commons. Although I tutor the occasional math or computer science student, I concentrate mostly on Paralegal Studies courses.
What was the most important lesson you learned from the COD Paralegal Studies program?
There are so many. But a simple lesson, stated by so many before me, is to get involved. I know that can be difficult for some with family and work obligations. For me, involvement was Paralegal Club.
What class did you find to be the most practical?
The legal research and writing classes were invaluable. These classes rekindled a somewhat dormant love of words in me. And they were fun. I enjoyed the research, and discovered the reformulation of that research into my own words to be challenging and rewarding.
What advice would you give to a current paralegal student?
While at COD, network. There are some sharp people in the Paralegal Studies program. Get to know them! A classmate dragged me to a Paralegal Club brown-bag lunch, and the rest is history. Joining Paralegal Club (actually I was drafted) introduced me to several people I remain friends with to this day. I expect these friendships will last a lifetime.
Outside of the classroom, prove your potential by taking on projects others ignore. When you take on a task that no one else is willing to do, you make yourself stand out.
Finally, never stop learning. For paralegals, the area of technology is a great way to stay relevant. Stay informed about how best to use the technology in your law office. Stay informed about the technology that other law offices are using. If you can show your knowledge of software or methods that produce a professional-looking, easy to execute finished product, you will be highly sought after.
Tell us an interesting story that sums up your experience as a paralegal.
