Q: I am seeking an Associate Degree and have a 3.75 GPA in my Paralegal Studies related classes. In my general education classes, however, my GPA is only 3.22. Does this qualify me for LEX?
A: No. Those seeking an Associate Degree require a 3.6 GPA in all Paralegal Studies related classes and a 3.25 GPA in all other classes. The “other classes” in this case refer to those not part of the Paralegal Studies program. Such as math, english, etc. They are considered separately, and the GPA calculation is also separate.
Q: I took a Paralegal Studies class during my first semester at COD but had a problem mid-semester that caused me to fail the class. I took the class again and got an “A.” How are these “two” grades calculated in my GPA?
A: Grades earned in every program-related class (i.e., PLGL or OFTI-1200) taken by a student will count toward calculating the student’s 3.6 GPA, regardless of whether the student later repeats a particular class for a higher grade. So in the example you’ve listed, both grades would be used in the GPA calculation.
Q: Are there non-PLGL classes that are considered part of the program-related classes?
A: Yes. For example, OFTI-1200, which is a required class, is considered a program-related class. Also, there are elective Criminal Justice classes (CRIMJ-1151 & CRIMJ-1153) that are considered program-related classes. For those pursuing an Associate of Arts degree, these are used to calculate the paralegal portion of the GPA, the 3.6 requirement.
Q: I am required to take a math class for my Associate of Arts degree. Because it had been so long since I had last taken math, I decided to take a math prep class. Does the “B” I received in my math prep class count toward the 3.25 “gen-ed” GPA?
A: No. Since the prep class is not a college-level class and is only taken to prepare a student for the subsequent college math, it is not considered in the GPA. This is true of all “college-prep” classes that begin with an “0.”
Q: I took an additional program-related elective that was not required to graduate because I thought it would be beneficial in my chosen area of law. Will this count in my program-related GPA?
A: Yes. It will be counted in the program-related GPA (the 3.6 part).
