1. Tell us a bit about yourself:

a. When did you graduate from the COD Paralegal Studies Program?

I graduated in December 2017

b. Where are you currently working?

After working at Segal, McCambridge, Singer and Mahoney for a year and a half following graduation as a legal assistant, I am now in law school at Chicago-Kent College of Law.

c. How did you choose that area of practice?

When I graduated from the Paralegal Program, I was quite open about what area of law I wanted to get into. The Program exposed me to such a variety of different areas of law, I learned that any practice area could be fun and rewarding if you are with the right people.

2. What was the most important lesson you learned from the Paralegal Studies Program?

Popular culture sometimes presents the law as very confrontational and intimidating, but I learned quickly that it can really be quite collaborative and a place for people of all different personality types. I did not really know what to expect when I first signed up for classes, but what I found was a welcoming community that gave me confidence to build a career in the field and (eventually) pursue further education to become an attorney myself.

3. What class did you find to be the most practical?

Although I gained valuable insights from all the classes that I took, I would say that the legal writing and research classes really prepared me to think through the legal process and craft all sorts of documents and arguments. More than anything, those classes helped me understand how legal arguments are formed and how to present those arguments to best advance the interests of clients.

4. What advice would you give to current paralegal students?

Enjoy it! As a student, I spent a lot of time stressing about tests and grades. But it is equally important to get to know your fellow classmates and instructors, get involved in Paralegal Club activities, and relish your time in such an uplifting community. Also, do not let anyone else define your success and do not be afraid to celebrate every small victory along the way!
