1. Tell us a bit about yourself:

a. When did you graduate from the COD Paralegal Studies Program?

My name is Kathleen Hernandez, 24, and I graduated from the COD Paralegal Studies Program in December of 2015.

b. Where are you currently working?

As of December 1, 2015, I have been working at primarily a bankruptcy law firm, as well as criminal, and family in Addison, Illinois for an attorney named Jay Reese.

c. How did you choose that area of practice?

When I met Mr. Reese, he left a lasting impression on me, and being familiar with bankruptcy law, I felt comfortable. Criminal and family law are the most dramatic of the bunch, therefore, it makes for exciting work days!

2. What was the most important lesson you learned from the Paralegal Studies Program?

The most important lesson I learned from the Paralegal Studies Program is to not be afraid to go for what you want! The people within the program help motivate one another on the highest level. I never felt "on my own" with something; we all helped one another.

3. What advice would you give to current paralegal students?

My advice is to get involved. We are all busy, but it is so important to get involved and have people know who you are. Half the battle is who you know when looking for jobs! Not only is it important when job hunting, but the friends you could possibly make may change your life!

4. Who or what inspired you to become a paralegal?

I was inspired in the 6th grade because I read a lot. My final project was on the Electoral College. My teachers thought I was crazy to tackle the subject, and then successfully comprehend it as a 12 year old. The more I read the more I found a fascination with the law. Becoming a paralegal was a huge success, but it may not be the "last stop" for this train! I will be attending Lewis University in the fall for their Accelerated Criminal/Social Justice Bachelor's Degree Program. I am so excited!
