When did you graduate from the COD Paralegal Studies program?
June 2013
Where are you currently working?
16th Judicial Circuit Court Kane County
How did you choose that area of practice?
By accident. I applied to be a Law Clerk for the County, but was instead offered my current position by the Chief Judge. My previous experience in foreclosure and as an Administrative Assistant made me the right candidate for the Mediation Program.
What was the most important lesson you learned from the COD Paralegal Studies program?
The entire curriculum has great value and to choose is difficult; however, preparing students new to law about the importance of being "thick-skinned" is priceless.
What class did you find to be the most practical?
Bankruptcy and Ethics. For my employer the latter is critical and closely adhered to. Working in Chancery, bankruptcy and family law, are all intertwined with foreclosure. Knowing the procedures of bankruptcy has helped our internal policies when defendants file while in active foreclosure.
What advice would you give to a current paralegal student?
The curriculum at COD is the foundation for your career in law. You must take the initiative to augment your knowledge. The law is constantly changing, keeping current will increase your potential and value as a paralegal.
Tell us an interesting story that sums up your experience as a paralegal.
My Program is one of ten in Illinois provided through the Attorney General grant. Working closely with plaintiff's, homeowner advocates, and Judiciary, I have helped to build this Program for the Circuit Court. I knew nothing about mediation when I began and now appreciate the value a "space" to communicate can provide party litigants. It never occurred to me either I would be working directly with judges, they have been generous to mentor me on how the judiciary branch functions.
Who or what inspired you to become a paralegal?
My boss at my first law firm, he saw the potential I had and always encouraged me to get a formal education as a paralegal.
