Why we still need libraries (especially in SW Santa Rosa):
· 98.7% provide internet access assuring a place to complete homework for 1 in 6 school children who do not have internet access at home;
· 95% offer summer reading programs to forestall children’s “summer slide” in reading achievement between school terms;
· Almost 90% offer basic digital literacy training, and significant training related to new technology devices, safe online practices and social media use;
· 76% assist patrons in using online government programs and services;
· A vast majority have programs that support people in applying for jobs, access to online job opportunity resources and using online business information resources;
· A significant majority host social connection events for adults, and teens in book discussion groups, gaming programs and other areas;
· 45% provide early-learning technologies for pre-K children;
· Over 33% provide literacy, GED prep, STEM and afterschool programs.
All at an average cost to the taxpayer of $31 per year!
