Basic Research :
Significant scientific contributions are made to the fundamental research in Chemical Engineering Science by working with frontiers of Process Systems Engineering and Process Operations and Control. Novel research contributions are made by integrating the knowledge of science and engineering with the computational techniques ranging from numerical & statistical methods to evolutionary computing & artificial intelligence. These works have led several research papers in journals of international repute and also in journals of interdisciplinary research. A brief note on personal research specializations is given as follows.
Dynamic modeling & identification : significant contributions are made to the development of first principle, empirical, fuzzy and neural network models for various
batch and continuous chemical processes as well as biochemical reactors and waste water treating biofilm reactors. Model parameter identification is studied by using
various conventional and evolutionary computing techniques.
Dynamic simulation & dynamic optimization : noteworthy contributions are made to this activity by developing various stochastic and evolutionary optimization
methods involving genetic algorithms, differential evolution, ant colony optimization, tabu search etc. Application systems include chemical, biochemical and effluent
treatment biofilm reactors.
Advanced process control : novel control strategies are developed towards nonlinear control, model predictive control, fuzzy logic control, neural network control, radial basis function network control etc. and evaluated them through application to highly complex, nonlinear and interactive chemical and biochemical systems such as reactive distillation columns, pH reactors, chaotic and runaway reactors.
State estimation & soft sensing : new state and parameter estimation methods are derived based on linear, nonlinear & unscented Kalman filters, linear & nonlinear observers, multivariate statistical techniques and artificial neural networks and evaluated by applying them to complex dynamic systems such as multistage multi-component batch and continuous distillation and reactive distillation, chaotic chemical and polymerization reactors, bio-reactors etc.
Process fault detection & diagnosis : various methods based on quantitative, qualitative, hybrid, neural network, fuzzy reasoning and multivariate kernel space techniques are developed and evaluated through implementation to chemical and bio chemical processes.
Bio-informatics : contributions are made to this activity by developing new methods involving statistical, artificial intelligence and evolutionary computation techniques and applying for classification and identification of gene sequences and proteins, designing and modeling of pharmaceutical formulation systems etc.
Research contributions: several publications in international journals of repute such as chemical engineering science, journal of process control, industrial &
engineering chemistry research, computers & chemical engineering, chemical engineering communications, chemical engineering research & design, bioprocess and
biosystems engineering, international journal of neural systems, computational biology and chemistry, bioresource technology etc.
Applied Research :
Significantly contributed to applied research by working as group leader, project leader and principal investigator for various projects sponsored by government agencies
