My research interests are in the Reformation in Germany, Italy and Britain, in particular on early sixteenth century religious history; the history of religious tolerance; the emerging category of “Global Reformations;” and sixteenth century sacred music. In my PhD dissertation, “Thomas Müntzer and the Allstedt Reformation,” I shed light on Müntzer’s original attempts to reform the Church, independently from Martin Luther. Through the full translation of his correspondence and work and reliance on archival material in Latin and in Old German, this study challenges traditional historiography that alternatively viewed Müntzer as a revolutionary and violent leader of the Peasants’ War, or as a false prophet and apocalyptic thinker. I have published my dissertation in the two following volumes: Christopher Martinuzzi, Allstedt 1523. Thomas Müntzer new giorni della reforma, Milano, Unicopli, 2017; Thomas Müntzer, Scritti, lettere, frammenti, a cure di C. Martinuzzi, Torino, Claudiana, 2017. I have published other aspects of my ongoing research in a number of essays, peer-reviewed journal articles, and encyclopedia entries. My article “Radical Reformation and Violence in the Years of the Bauernkrieg,” for example, critiques the historical categories of “radical Reformation,” violence, and secular power in the years that preceded the Great Peasants’ War of 1525. I have also published a book chapter on Thomas Müntzer’s legacy and historiography and co-authored a recent article on sixteenth century exile communities with Dr. Emese Balint.
