APPLIED THEATRE
My working definition of applied theatre: a group of trained performers with one member acting as a facilitator that works with communities to create dialog on a variety of social issues without forcing the performing groups’ point of view. They would do this through performances that recreate life like situations where the audience from all backgrounds and experiences will have a chance to step in the situation and perform as spec-actors. This will help them become participants as well as spectators in the subject matter and encourage a dialog on these issues presented within their community. I define community-engaged theatre as artist’s working with people of a community who are directly affected by the subject matter of the performance. The community-engaged theatre’s performance subject performances would deal with social change and local cultural preservation.
