Newark's Kastner - Schueler family of brewers

F. J. KASTNER CO's PHOENIX BREWERY, NEWARK, NEW JERSEY

1864 - Founded (according to Obituary).

1870 - ~5000 barrels. (NY Herald)

1878 - 15,349 bbl.

1879 - 14,637 bbl. (~9th largest Newark brewer, out of around two dozen)

1889 - Sold to English syndicate, forming "Emerald and Phoenix Brewing Co.". At the time with a capacity of 100,000 bbl/yr and 78 tied houses. Combined with NYC's Emerald brewery, the barrelage was approx. 165,000 in 1888.

1906 - 50 tied houses in Newark.

1901 - 1909 - Charles Shutte and J. Theis listed as executives of the brewery (E&P ownership).

1902 - After a loss, the NYC "Emerald" ale brewery is closed and the property sold.

1909 - Adds new "50 bbl." bottling department.

1912 - Sold toHermann A. Schalk.

The Kastner brewery, 4 years after selling it to the English syndicate.

Franz "Frank" J. Kastner

(1819 - 1905) Born in Rashstadt, Germany, emigrated to the US in 1860. Sold brewery to English syndicate in 1889 (which also purchased NYC's T. C. Lyman & Co's Emerald Brewery, as well as, reportedly, Newark's Lyon & Sons, as well as a Jersey City and two Ohio breweries) and was put on the board of the new organization, retiring from active brewing.

Theodore August Kastner

(1847 - 1937) Born in Germany, emigrated to the US with family in 1860. Attended brewing academy in Germany and took control of Kastner's brewery. Continued to brew at the Kastner's Phoenix brewery after being bought by the English syndicate ("Emerald and Phoenix Brewing Co. NYC"), retiring in 1904.

Ludwig E. Schueler

(son-in-law of Theo. Kastner) - Brewmaster at V. Loewer's Gambrinus Brewery Co., New York City. Father was a brewmaster in Germany, learned the trade in his home country and studied under Anton Schwarz in the US, graduating from the United States Brewer's Academy in 1894.

Anthony L. (Ludwig) Schueler

(1881 - 1956 --- Brother of Ludwig) - Brewmaster at Fieganspan Brewing Co., Newark (starting in 1907). One of three in the Pre-Pro era, along with Jacob D. Baer and John S. Eggert (listed as "Assistant Brewmaster" on WWI draft registration). Lived at 17 Freeman Street in 1918 - 1940, across the street from brewery. Claimed to have tasted 284 different beers in 1939 wire service story.

L.E. "Lud" Schueler, Jr.

(1902 - 2001 --- Son of Ludwig )

Feigenspan - "mechanical engineer" - 1937.

P. Ballantine & Sons - 1949 "Brewery Superintendent"

"Brewing Dept. Manager" in 1954

Retired as "Personnel Director" in 1963 according to obituary.

Theodore Schueler

(Son of Ludwig) Assistant masterbrewer at V. Loewer's Gambrinus Brewery in NYC (1930s), working under his father. Became master brewer at Loewers (1940s) upon his father's retirement.

Masterbrewer at Dawson's Brewery, Inc., New Bedford, MA (1950s) continuing at that brewery after being bought by Rheingold, (dba Jacob Rupert Brewing Co. and Forrrest Brewing Co. for their Gablinger's brand]) in the mid-1970s - likely until being shutdown in 1977).
