Found Sculpture Project
The title for my sculpture is Broomstick in Flight
The Dimensions of my sculpture are 19 Inches tall by 33 inches long by 15 inches wide.
Materials used in my sculpture:
When I first assembled everything together, it was a very rough draft. Nothing was connected, and it was all falling off, and nothing would stay together like I wanted it too. I had a rough Idea of how I wanted it to look. I thought that I could take some string or yarn to lash it together like I learned in my boy scout days, but then I remembered I had seen a bag of zip ties in my dads trailer while I was looking for the pieces to assemble my sculpture. I used the zip ties then rather than the string because I felt like they bound my elements together in a much stronger fashion, and left everything tight and neat like I wanted it.
My thought process is one that is hard to depict and put down in words. When I went out to my parents side yard, which is essentially the equivalent of a junk yard. I started gathering some things and put them in a big pile, thinking what could I use to replicate this, or that and how the pieces would work together. Eventually I just started piecing things together. My original junkyard sculpture is not the one that I took pictures of. My original piece was a miniature swing set with flagpoles, and ladles. But it seemed too easy to me so I wanted to make something a little more intrinsic. I started to piece these things together, and it just sort of flowed afterwards. I put it all together, and bound it and it came out right.
As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, one of the initial challenges that I noticed was that I felt that my initial sculpture was too easy. That it needed to be something more than what it was in order to achieve a good grade. I didn't realize it at the time, but I think I missed the point of the project to just create something out of something else. Re purposing in essence, and I believe I achieved that with both of my sculptures, but thinking back on it I think that I definitely thought too hard about it, and talked myself out of my initial process. And I addressed the issue by creating a new sculpture which took a little bit more work, but I think was certainly worth it.
I feel like my sculpture turned out well. I've never done anything really artistic in my life, and this was my first sort of foray in to this field of study. It was a fun project, and I would definitely do something like this again. Maybe include my wife and family and have a competition to see who can be the most creative. It turned out pretty well as I expected, although that is hard to judge because I don't think I expected anything specifically. If I could change anything, I would search and find something I could use to represent the bristles of a broom, but all in all I am happy with the results.
