Further guidance on the IA length (updated Jan 10, 2024)
• The individual investigation should be between 6 and 12 pages long. Examiners must not mark beyond 12 pages of candidate work. A reasonable font size and margin width should be used to ensure that information is presented clearly.
• Any data or supporting information, including comments from the school, should not be counted as part of the 6-12 pages marked. A reasonable sample of the raw data within the investigation from, for example, a data logger, is sufficient.
• The quantity of data collected or used should be appropriate to the investigation being carried out.
• Full calculations using the raw data are not expected to be shown (examples will suffice) at this time the BCAIBWS is inquiring as to whether Works Cited need to be completed within the 12 page limit. regardless of the outcome of that inquiry, two pages of written IA content is likely to contribute more to a student's score than their Works Cited, so for the time being at least, teachers can proceed as though the written content of the IA is not to exceed 12 pages, and Works Cited and Data are to be considered to exist outside of that constraint.
New Criteria:
One investigation of max 3000 words is required, and graded by teacher and moderated by the IB. This grade will be 20% of the overall grade.
The report will have an academic and scholarly presentation, and demonstrate scientific rigor commensurate with the course.
