About Farmington, CT
Previous to the early 1640s the Farmington Valley was the home of the Tunxis Indians, a sub-tribe of the Saukiogs. They had given the area the name Tunxis Sepus meaning "bend in the little river."
In 1640 a settlement was established by residents of Hartford making Farmington the oldest inland settlement west of the Connecticut River and one of the oldest communities in Connecticut.
The Town of Farmington was incorporated in 1646. Known as the "Mother Town", Farmington was partitioned into the towns of Avon, Bristol, Plainville, New Britain, Berlin, Southington and Burlington.
During the Revolutionary War George Washington passed through Farmington on several occasions and referred to the town as "the village of pretty houses."
The Farmington Canal, a minor canal connecting New Haven with Northhampton, Mass. passed through Farmington on the eastern bank of the river and operated intermittently between 1828 and 1848. While never a commercial success, the canal's right of way and towpath were eventually used for a railroad that was in use up to the 1990s. Much of the towpath and railroad bed have been converted to a cycling and running trail from New Haven to Northhampton.
Farmington today comprises 28.7 square miles along the Farmington River. The population as of the 2000 census was 23,641. It has a Council-Manager form of government with a Council Chairperson as the chief elected official and a Town Manager as the Chief Executive Officer. It is home to the world headquarters of several large corporations including Carrier Corporation, Otis Elevator and Carvel.
