奥会津の町、金山に3年通い、3年暮らした。

人口約2000人の、只見川の流れる豪雪の町。角田勝之助という類まれな写真家の仕事の整理に携わることを通して、私はこの町を知った。

空き家を借りて町に移り住むと、写真を中心とする町の映像資料編纂事業が、次第に私の仕事となりはじめた。この町で過ごした6年の間、様々な時間と場所から多くの人の手を介して現在に伝えられた写真を見ること、そうした様々な時間と場所を振り返って語られた人々の言葉を聞くことが、私の生活の中心にあった。目の前にひらけた現在と、誰かによって届けられた過去の写真と言葉、その2つの「かねやま」を 私は行き来していた。

わたしたちの姿は わたしたちの為すことのうちに／余すことなく あらわれている

謎のない「人為のかたち」の前で私が必要としていたのは、まず十全に立ち尽くす術であった。

I frequented Kanayama, a mountain town in western Fukushima Prefecture for three years. Then I moved and had lived there for three years.

Kaneyama is a small town of about 2,000 people with an extremely high rate of aging population. The Tadami River runs through the town, where heavy snow falls in winter. I got to know Kaneyama through organizing works of an outstanding local photographer, Katsunosuke Tsunoda.

I rented a traditional old empty house and started life in this town. Then, compiling the town's visual archives, mainly focusing on photography, began to become my work there. My life during the six years in this town always with old photographs and words about them. I spent the days in Kaneyama as if I lived in two towns, one in the past and one in the present.

Everything what we do tells us who we are. There is no secrets.

To make a portrait of the town, therefore, I just had to stand and watch what we have done and what we are doing.
