杉並や世田谷といった東京の西側の住宅地に目を向けることから私の仕事は始まった。人はいかなる環境を生み出し、いかに暮らしているのだろうか。そうした疑問を引き起こす風景に対し、写真という身近なメディアを用いていかなるアプローチが可能だろうか。私の作家としての基本的な問題意識は、自分自身の故郷を舞台としたこの初期のシリーズに取り組むことを通じて鮮明になっていった。

I started my career as a photographer with projects in residential areas on the west side of Tokyo, such as Suginami and Setagaya. What kind of environment does people create and how do they live? What kind of approach can we take to these landscapes with photography? My fundamental interest as an artist became clearer as I worked on this early series on my home town, Tokyo.
