READING COMPREHENSION
- Whole group instruction on reading skills and strategies (Treasures, and supplemental materials)
- Small group instruction at student’s level (short texts and novels)
- Authentic literature experience to support science and social studies content knowledge (novels)
- Homework (Reading chart, novels, content area assignments)
WORD KNOWLEDGE
- Spelling and vocabulary will alternate bi-weekly
- Greek and Latin stems (monos/unus)
- Content area vocabulary
- Challenge words
ORAL READING FLUENCY
- Assessed three times per year
- Paired activity for those who need support
WRITING
- Will cover 4 modes of writing–descriptive, expository, persuasive, and narrative
- Several major papers over the year
- Will include grammar instruction as well as the 6 Traits of Writing (ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice, and conventions)
- Writing samples will be sent home to be signed, and then kept in your student’s writing portfolio at school.
SPEAKING
- Two formal assessments:
- Colonial Wax Museum presentation in the winter
- Francophone presentation in the spring.
