I am a computational social scientist, engineer, and systems researcher who works on various aspects of modeling the dynamics of organizational, economic, and social systems. My research focuses on the connections between micro-level rules, structural interdependence, and macro-level outcomes across diverse settings, including organizational dynamics, industry evolution, competitive spatial location, and agricultural markets.
Initially trained as an industrial engineer, I embarked on a unique MSc program in industrial engineering with a concentration in industrial organization, bridging the gap between engineering and economics, in the late 1990s. Under the supervision of Fernando Beltrán (currently at the University of Auckland), I developed price mechanisms for data networks, building a few models in the SDML programming language and uncovering the potential of agent-based simulation in the process. Inspired by the 1990s work of the University of Amsterdam's Center for Computer Science in Organization and Management (CSOM) and motivated by conversations with systems scientist Gerard de Zeeuw, I delved into the realm of modeling organizational and social systems.
I received my PhD degree from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen under the supervision of two great social scientists: Dutch economist Arjen van Witteloostuijn and Hungarian mathematical sociologist Gábor Péli.
