Where we are

Cártama is a municipality in the province of Málaga with more than 27,000 inhabitants. Located just 18 kilometers from the capital and 6 kilometers from the Technology Park of Andalusia, Cártama is in a unique geographical and strategic location. Of Phoenician origin, Cártama is crossed by the Guadalhorce River and becomes a great viewpoint of the Guadalhorce Valley.

The municipal term limits with the municipalities of Malaga, Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Coín, Pizarra and Almogía. This location gives it a strategic location that completely conditions its economic and social development.

Due to its location, it is part of the metropolitan area of ​​the capital of Malaga and the backbone formed by the capital of Malaga, the University of Malaga and the Technology Park of Andalusia, which in turn define the so-called productive triangle together with the Airport.

The strategic location, the proximity to Malaga and the Costa del Sol, and the excellent highway and rail communications, have made Cártama one of the municipalities in the province with the greatest capacity to attract human and economic capital in the form of investments, business initiatives and population. 


How to get

Cártama enjoys excellent communications that link it with the capital, with the interior of the province and with the Costa del Sol.

From Malaga it can be reached by road through the A-357 motorway, or by rail through the suburban train that connects Malaga with Álora (Line C-2).

You can also reach the municipality with the M-131 bus line of the Metropolitan Transport Consortium of the Malaga Area.

From the Costal del Sol it can be accessed by the A-7052 road that connects the A-7 (N-340) with Churriana, Alhaurín de la Torre and Cártama, or by the A-7059 and the A-355, which connect to Marbella with Cártama via Coín.

Region

The Valle del Guadalhorce region is located in the center-south of the province of Malaga, and represents the bridge between the interior of the province and the Costa del Sol, which makes its geographical location a true privilege. 

The Guadalhorce river that gives it its name, forms the backbone of the Malaga territory and after collecting the waters of the Antequera region and crossing the mountain range through the Gaitanes Gorge, it becomes adult and forms its own valley. And it is there where, together with its main tributary, the Rio Grande, it creates the richest of Malaga soils.

A valley that is at the same time a path and a fertile corridor of orchards and people, and an amphitheater of mountains that provide their waters, their shelter and their landscape. Orchards dotted with farmhouses and farmhouses, orchards that cover the bottom of the valley and climb in ditches through headwaters and small hills.

Among the mountains are the towns of Alhaurín el Grande , Almogía , Álora , Cártama , Coín , Pizarra and Valle de Abdalajís , constituting the Guadalhorce region, nestled to the west of Malaga capital, located in a privileged point due to its proximity to it, to the Costa del Sol, the airport, the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, the Gaitanes gorge and the Chorro reservoirs, as well as the Montes de Málaga. And enjoying a microclimate without extreme temperatures, which make the region an ideal place to carry out cultural, gastronomic and sports tourist activities.

Geography

The municipality of Cártama has an area of ​​105 square kilometers and is made up of 11 population centers that are dispersed, so we can consider our town as a province within the province of Malaga.

The presence of the Guadalhorce river and the support of the Espartales (400 m), Llana (405 m) mountain ranges, which together make up what is known as Sierra de Cártama, provide the possibility of enjoying its picturesque landscapes in direct contact with the nature: Río Grande, La Aljaima, Ribera del Guadalhorce Park, the Castle Esplanade, Las Viñas or Los Pechos.

In the south of the municipality is the Sierra de Cártama, where you can walk until you reach the "Pico del Águila" or the "Cerro Umbría" and enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the Guadalhorce Valley, Montes de Málaga, Sierra de las Nieves and of the Costa del Sol.

In the center and north extend "Los Pechos de Cártama", of great natural beauty and formed by a set of undulating hills with palmettos and brooms. To the west, we find the Sierra de Gibralgalia, where we can visit "El Cerro del Tambor", and rest under the shade of the holm oaks and carob trees.

On the banks of the Guadalhorce River you can see different waterfowl, such as herons, egrets, as well as some barbels, turtles, water snakes and frogs. All this nature can be enjoyed by hiking along the various routes that run through the municipality.

 


Population centers

The municipality of Cártama is made up of 11 population centers, each one with its idiosyncrasy, its customs and traditions. We can consider our town as a small province within the province of Malaga.

The population centers of Cártama are: Cártama Pueblo, Cártama Station, El Sexmo, Sierra de Gibralgalia, Doña Ana, Loma de Cuenca, Aljaima Station, Nueva Aljaima, Las Tres Leguas, Los Mondeños and El Pilarejo.
