WELCOME

A few years ago, I was looking into replacing my much loved Boston Acoustic speakers that I purchased during college. The foam surround on the woofer had disintegrated. Researching speakers on the internet, I came across a vibrant DIY speaker community so I decided instead of purchasing a commercial speaker, I would build one of the existing DIY designs and modify it to suit my needs and learn something in the process.

In the last few years I have built and experimented with many different speaker designs.

Here are a few of the speakers I have built over the last few years:

LXC

LXC

This is a low cost version of Siegfried Linkwitz's LXmini speaker that I made using drivers that I had on hand. The sound is excellent so I thought is would be an good way for people to try out this type of speaker with a smaller investment.

Rigel

Rigel is an dipole (open back) speaker using many of the ideas of Siegfried Linkwitz, a legend in speaker design community. It's named after a star in the Orion constellation. This design was inspired by the Orion design with a open mid-range and front a back tweeters. For the bass section I used a sealed 10" woofers to keep the cost and the size down and also allow it to be used as dual sub-woofers for home theater.

Dot

Dot

The Dot is omni-polar speaker that uses a 3/4 in tweeter and a 3.5 in full-range speaker in close proximity to to create complete 360 degree radiation pattern up to about 5 KHz and then slowly move to a forward directivity. This design was inspired by Siegfried Linkwitz's Pluto design but is omni-polar to even a higher frequency. It also has very little diffraction due to the lack of baffle and uses very low distortion drivers.

MB20

This is one of the first speaker's I built and it was based on the MB20 by Dennis Murphy. I wanted something that was stable that the kids wouldn't knock over (no speaker stands) whose height was lower than the chair rail where the speakers would be placed. The original design was for a small book self speaker and I modified the design to be a slim tower with 10" side-firing woofer and a separate sub-woofer amplifier. Both the upper and lower sections are sealed.
