Other Villages

You will find groups like ours doing 'international' folk dancing in most any major city in the U.S., often at universities. REAL hotbeds exist in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, and New York City. The states of California, Texas and Florida are worthy of special mention. Scandinavia and Australia are terrific.  The Eastern European Folklife Center (EEFC -www.eefc.org), puts on two week long summer camps filled with daily lessons on dancing, singing, and playing folk instruments, followed by nightly dance parties, followed by all night club music and dancing.  They also maintain an email list that is a wonderful resource for finding music, lyrics, and dance venues if traveling to other cities.

Regional Folk Dancing

Baton Rouge International Folk Dancers dance on Friday nights on the LSU campus, at the Huey Long Fieldhouse.  7:30 pm on Fridays that are not holidays, with a summer break in July and August. http://brifd.homestead.com/index.html

Pensacola dancers no longer meet on a regular basis, but if you are in the area check with Georgeanna (850-255-6122) to see if any dancing is planned (such as the Greek Festival, first weekend in November)

There is dancing in Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.  Texas groups contact info.  In addition, there is an annual workshop over the Thanksgiving Day weekend; Texas Camp is about a 9 hours drive from New Orleans; between Austin and Waco, just south of Waco.

More info and registration at: http://tifd.org/texas-camp/

There are too many single focus groups (Irish, Israeli, Cajun, Zydeco, Square, Contra, etc.) to list and keep track of.  Try the web search engines with your particular dance interest and location.

International Folk Dancing around the world

The National Folk Organization has a pretty good list, see NFO home page.

The Folk Dance Phone Book and Group Directory was published yearly from 1993 to 2022 by the Society of Folk Dance Historians.  Google and the internet have apparently made it superfluous.  Some print publications are still available at their website.
