Title: Two-Point Correlation Function Studies in the Milky Way: Spatial Clustering from Disk Excitations and Substructure
Abstract: With the release of Gaia DR2, the astronomy community has discovered several significant structures in our Galaxy's phase space, including the phase space spiral, Gaia-Enceladus, and numerous stellar streams. In this talk, I will introduce a new implementation of the two-particle correlation function (2PCF) as a means of uncovering structure within the Milky Way. Namely, I will explain how Galactic symmetries afford us the opportunity to examine structural differences throughout the Galaxy, in contrast to relying on a model as in usual analyses. Moreover, I will explain how a sample of stars can be selected from the Gaia database with minimal scan-law artefacts and how this enables the two-particle correlation study within our own Galaxy. This novel, model-independent method enables a powerful test of Galactic symmetries, highlighting structural differences North and South of the midplane. Indeed, previously discovered vertical waves appear in this analysis in a new light, and marked variations appear in the waves as one examines different regions of the Galaxy, especially at heights well above the midplane. I will also outline ongoing work with the 2PCF wherein Gaia data well above the midplane is compared against a model of the Milky Way in an effort to uncover signatures of dark matter substructure in the halo.
