Technology has had a positive place in education with its resources for learning and communication, but it also has received negative press considering addictions to devices, time on task, and isolation of students. Students, however, feel that they are not connected to devices but rather connected to a network and community in which they live. Educators could feel more comfortable with this concept if technology could be viewed as an asset rather than a distraction. Join us to hear from students on how teachers can leverage technology to not only build better relationships with students and each other, but also as a way to promote mental health, confidence, positivity, and acceptance into a lifelong community of learners.
This session is created by and presented by eleventh and twelfth grade high school students who are a part of a Teacher Education program at the Blue Valley Center for Advanced Professional Studies. They work with practicing teachers and their students and also research and study innovations in learning. Our Backchannel: https://padlet.com/tfry2020/lzvmis39bjgr

CAPS: A Design for Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers
In order to reimagine learning in a changing and diverse world, students need teachers who are trained in social media and 21st century skills so that they can relate and adapt curriculum to a changing global community. Collaborative learning and teaching skills are crucial for future educational leaders. At the Blue Valley Center for Advanced Professional Studies, the teacher education program uses social media and 21st century (and beyond) technologies to guide future teachers into a profession which thrives on collaboration and focuses on the impact of this concept to shape our educational leaders of tomorrow.
Participants will be taken through a journey of research and resources and hands-on activities that will spark innovation and success for students in the classroom and beyond the classroom.Travel through a virtual environment using avatars for collaboration, manipulate augmented reality tools, and see examples of other cutting-edge technology that can reshape the educational experiences of students. In addition, see ways in which the visual environment of the student is becoming more and more critical for academic success. Contemporary learners are stimulated visually more than ever, caused by the influence of stimuli in the world around them. Things such as classroom environment, technological integration, and student well-being should all be addressed to allow all students to reach their maximum academic potential.
Games offer many educational gains when incorporated into the students’ learning adventures. Critical thinking skills, problem-solving, open-ended and customized learning are all part of the gaming world.
Through games, students can interact, experiment, create, and share…actions that promote the true essence of learning. Gaming allows a truly constructivist approach to the classroom where students are not only entertained and encouraged to do something hands-on, but also are gaining skills necessary for success in the classroom and beyond the classroom and are becoming masters of their own learning. Come and “play” with us and see the power of games like Xbox and others that spark innovation and excitement in learning and that are changing the paradigm of today’s classroom.
STEM Workshop
In a collaborative effort to enrich instruction and to enhance the experience of future educators, CAPS Teacher Education students are teaching a total of approximately 180 5th graders over a four-day period in the Manhattan USD 383 school district. This teaching experience is virtual. Students in Manhattan communicate via Double Robots housing ipads, which CAPS students maneuver via ipad or laptop. The lesson presented is on DNA and includes writing, manipulatives, project management, videos, etc. and teaches to objectives aligned with the Engineering Design Process and Kansas State Science Standards. The lesson is presented each day to a different group of 5th graders. Edmodo is used as a shell to house questions, quizzes, resources, and evaluations.
Classroom Savvy: Social Media in the Classroom
Education is way behind in terms of tools and resources used for instruction. Using social networking tools, ie. twitter, instagram, chats, Skype, oovoo, etc., makes the classroom real. Participants will be taken through a journey of research and resources and hands-on activities that will spark innovation and success for students in the classroom and beyond the classroom. Travel through a virtual environment using avatars for collaboration, manipulate augmented reality tools, and see examples of other cutting-edge technology that can reshape the educationalexperiences of students and increase opportunities for networking and collaborative experiences. Social Networking is a piece that many teachers avoid or don't consider appropriate for the classroom environment; however, using such tools in the classroom can energize students and allow them to see ways to use these tools to enhance their learning. Contemporary learners are stimulated visually more than ever, caused by the influence of stimuli in the world around them. With the implementation of social networking tools, the classroom can become a real-world networking source, enhancing the learning experience for all students to reach their maximum academic potential.
