About Us

The Capital Area Concert Band is open to anyone who played an instrument in high school and wants to make music today. As always, new members are welcome to join, and there are no auditions or fees to participate. The band rehearses and performs in late August through April. Rehearsals are held Tuesday nights in the Becker Library building on the former Benedictine University campus.

Our History

For 50 years, the Capital Area Concert Band has shared the joy of live music with the Springfield area. The band was founded in 1974 by Tom Ford, a teacher at Lanphier High School who saw the need for a group where anyone who played an instrument in their high school band could continue to play after they had graduated.

Hundreds of local musicians have been members over the years, donating their time to play in this group. Some are professionals with extensive training, while others are rediscovering their musical talents after stepping away from music for many years. A few founding members still play with the band, and members range in age from 20s-80s.
