The border track runs alongside the border between South Australia and Victoria. The whole 2 week journey took us through Kosciusko NP, Walby Range SP, Mt Samaria, The Grampians, Murray Sunset NP & the Little Desert. The main part of the trip was to travel the Border Track. This track starts west of Mildura and twists along the Victorian border through the Murray Sunset NP then crosses the border into South Australia at Ngarkat NP before crossing into Victoria once again. We travelled the length of the Border Track to the junction with East-West track in the Little Desert & then through the main tracks in the Little Desert. The sand was very soft and with the additional weight of the camper made crossing some of the dunes difficult. The alternative route was often just as bad but usually not as steep. The approaches to the dunes were often badly cut up destroying any momentum you might build up. Low range, steady speed and low tyre pressures were required. (18psi in the front and 22 in the rear). Fuel consumption on the Ranger (3.0 diesel auto) was around 17l/100k along the track. Fascinating to see the Mallee desert on one side of the Border track and wheat fields covering the sandy dunes on the other.
