Byeongwoo Kang is Professor of Innovation Management at Hitotsubashi University, Japan. His research explores issues related to standard essential patents, innovation processes, knowledge flows, and the role of institutions in shaping technology and business strategy. He has published widely in journals such as Research Policy, and his work has been recognized with awards from both international and domestic academic societies as well as industry.
Before joining Hitotsubashi, Kang worked as a wireless communications engineer. In this role, he gained firsthand experience in R&D, standardization, and innovation management, e.g., co-filing more than 50 U.S. patent applications (of which over 40 were granted), managing university–industry collaborative projects, and contributing to technology development in practice. This experience provides a base for his research and teaching in innovation management.
Kang is active in the international innovation research community, serving on the editorial boards of international and domestic journals and on the management boards of academic societies.
Lastly, he also engages with private firms in advisory and governance roles.
