We are always looking to work with new dairies that are aligned with our vision of calf care.

With many advancing technologies developing within the world of calf care we wanted to test our methods in order to ensure our animals receive the best care. To test our procedures in January of this year we purchased 100 bull calves to carry out a rate of gain study as we wanted to know exactly how we are doing.

Through this study calves were treated the same as all of our animals are. They were housed in the same areas, provided the same food, given jackets upon entry, and provided every service that we give our heifer calves. At weaning, calves were eating approximately 6-8 pounds of starter feed and had a seamless transition from individual huts to group pens. It quickly became evident that the key to continual weight gain after weaning was preparing calves’ digestive system to be ready for a diet of starter feed. Overall, we are very satisfied with the results. Bull calves in this study will be ready to market as fully finished steers in 13- 14 months.

What does this mean for your calves? In addition to a similar rate of gain, we offer some additional benefits to your dairy.

• Each calf at BBA receives individual care and spends the first 60 days in a single occupancy hut. Our calves don’t have to compete for food or attention.
• At BBA, we can accommodate all your calves. We take calves in each and every day of the year plus we can handle any variance in your freshening schedule.
• All calves are tested for BVD. No persistently infected calf leaves our farm.
• We have a staff at BBA who are trained exclusively to feed and handle your heifer calves. Our staff is comprised of highly skilled individuals and the average years of employment for our full time staff is 7 years.
• In addition to our staff, we have an extensive group of experts in the field of calf care that support our business. In times of crisis, we can draw upon their knowledge to solve problems that may occur.

Our commitment to raising a healthy calf to return to your dairy never waivers from day to day. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our operations and contain costs without comprising our quality of service. We have never been comfortable with what is, and are always striving to do better.
