Fish eDNA

Overview

The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to monitor biodiversity marine environment (especially fishes) has really taken off over the last few years. Katrina West and I have several active eDNA projects. One project involves using eDNA to characterise biodiversity in deep ocean seamounts around the remote Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, which are home to two large new Australian marine parks. The eDNA samples were collected throughout the water column, some down to >4000 metres during voyages on CSIRO’s Marine National Facility (RV Investigator). We also have several projects looking at coastal marine sites, this includes eDNA projects at Reef Life Survey sites in collaboration with Graham Edgar and PhD student Lara Denis-Roy (University of Tasmania).
