Learn more about the sloops CLEARWATER and WOODY GUTHRIE
1987
2009
Pete Seeger and the crew of the sloop Clearwater gave concerts along the maiden voyage from Maine to NY in 1969 to help pay back money borrowed to get the boat out of the shipyard. They were the original Hudson River Sloop Singers. By the 1980s Pete Seeger had a huge chorus of sloop singers performing with him raising voices, money and environmental awareness.
In 1986 a set was recorded during Clearwater's annual festival called the Great Hudson River Revival. Some of those songs and a few more recorded in the studio became a 1987 vinyl record, Broad Old River. In 2009 five songs more were brought back from the original 8 track recording and a story added to create a CD, Broad Old River 2. The CD release concert was a reunion in Beacon, NY with Pete just turned 90.
The Broad Old River 2 CD has the 12 songs on the vinyl, a story about Pete Seeger and the Hudson River Sloop Singers and 5 additional songs from the original 1986 8-track live recording at Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Pete is one of many artists in this unique folk ensemble recording.
All money collected from the sale of the vinyl record and CD is sent to the Beacon Sloop Club and Clearwater for repair and upkeep of the Sloops CLEARWATER and WOODY GUTHRIE. It is a Mel and Vinnie project to honor our time as singing sailors on the Hudson River. For more information contact Vinnie C and Mel Healy at spittoonstudios@gmail.com or visit melandvinnie.com
