Welcome to BSA TROOP 148, a proud member of Monmouth Council, Twin Lights District, celebrating 40 years. We meet on Mondays at 7 PM at the Elks Lodge 150 Garfield Avenue, Long Branch, NJ. We invite families with boys ages 11 to 18 to visit our troop and learn about Scouting. Call 732-822-4454 for more information.
December, 2017: We had a wonderful time during the winter holiday season! Our families came together to enjoy the festivities, traditions, and food at our dinner in December.
It is still warm by the ocean in September and Troop 148 and Pack 113 set up camp on Long Branch Beach. The summer crowds were gone so we pretty much had the whole beach to ourselves. We toasted jumbo marshmallows on the fire, ate burgers, roasted hot dogs, ate black rice, green salad (with a lime vinaigrette) avocado and tomato sandwiches, (the tomatoes grilled eggplant and peppers were grown at the 7th Avenue garden) and then smores for dessert.
Some of the things we learned- how to use a pocketknife. how to use a hand axe, how sharpen it and how to use a saw. We learned how to pitch a tent ( and sleep in it). We learned how to start, cook a meal on and extinguish a fire. We followed the guidelines of LEAVE NO TRACE.
We would like to thank the City of Long Branch for granting us permission to use the beach, the Long Branch Police Department who kept us safe, Mr. Yustak for the photos, and the parents who stayed up all night with coffee! You rock!
On the weekend of August 15th some of the boys in the troop came out to help remove debris from the mysterious house on Takanassee Lake, and a deer wearing full antlers ran at the Scoutmaster's parked car, then dashed across the street towards Monmouth University. Restoring the building and the surrounding grounds has been a project headed by Here's the link that tells you about the building: http://weirdnj.com/stories/abandoned/long-branch-stone-house/
On July 11th in spite of the rainstorm, Troop 148 set up camp at Allaire State Park. We learned that there is no electricity in the camping area, and when it gets dark, it's VERY dark! According to one scout, that's OK-because the flying bugs dive bomb anything that lights up. That includes cell phones.
Allaire State Park is in Farmingdale, NJ. The Manasquan River runs through the park. For more information about Allaire, follow this link: Allaire State Park Website.
On July 4th, we helped decorate the Lodge and distributed flags to the public on behalf of the Elks at Oceanfest 2017.
Troop 148 has been very active through the summer and helped clear out the brush and debris in and around the Seventh Avenue Community Garden in Long Branch. The Long Branch Concordance Family Success Center manages the site.
In June, Troop 148 participated in the Flag Day Ceremony with the Elks Lodge.
If you stop by the boardwalk here in Long Branch you will notice that there is new beachgrass planted. A few of our Scouts braved the winter chill early Saturday morning with Mayor Schneider and the Long Branch Environmental Commission to install it. Why plant beachgrass? Beachgrass helps build and stabilize dunes. Blades of grass help trap wind-blown sand which can create new dunes and expand existing dunes.
To promote new dune growth and to help protect Long Branch from flooding, we need to limit people, pets, and vehicles from crossing dunes in all but designated areas. Please help conserve Long Branch's beachfront by telling friends and family about the importance of beachgrass, and remind them to stay off any areas where beachgrass is planted. To all the Scouts and their families who participated thank you for your help!
